According to creator Shane Brennan, Callen had a very troubled past. Between the ages of 5 and 18, he lived in dozens of different foster homes. It is what makes Callen so good at becoming someone else. He had a hard time fitting in. He has worked for the FBI, the CIA and the DEA and he was thrown out of every agency because he was just too out there. He's finally found the place he belongs -- NCIS.

In episode 7, it said that Callen was 14 in 1983, and also at some point that he was born in 1969, which would make him 41.

In "Identity", we discover that he doesn't just use "G" as an initial because he doesn't like his first name, he doesn't know it because the state never told him. In "Burned" we find out Eugene Killson claims to know what the G stands for and that Callen should have been asking "Why?" instead of "Who?" in regards to Callen's past. Callen was forced to use deadly force before Killson revealed what he knew or how he had found out.

In "G, Callen", we find out that Callen had a sister named Amy Callen. She drowned in a river when she was twelve and in an orphanage, and her best friend Hannah Lawson took her identity and later told Callen about the real Amy. Callen asked what Amy had called him, and Hannah (posing as Amy) had replied, "Just baby brother."

  • Sam sees the glass as half full. I see it as half empty. That's why we make a great team. Kensi, on the other hand, just drinks right out of the bottle. Nate wonders why it has to be glass. And Eric usually breaks the glass by putting his feet up on the table
  • You hear of good cop/bad cop. This is called bad cop/bad cop. We can do things to you to make waterboarding feel like a spongebath.

  • Fluent in Russian, complete with accent.
  • The longest he was in one foster home was 4 months.
  • He had a foster sister named Alina.
  • He was shot five times during the drive-by shooting.
  • He had a blood-related sister named Amy, who died by drowning when she was 12. Her friend at the orphanage took on her identity and pretended to be her.
